Day by day

Day 1: Arrive in Tashkent

Settle into the capital and ease in gently. Ride the Tashkent metro just to see its palatial, chandeliered stations, browse the huge Chorsu Bazaar under its blue dome, and visit the Khast Imam complex, home to one of the world’s oldest Qurans. Eat your first plov, the national rice dish.

Day 2: Train to Samarkand

Take the fast morning train to Samarkand, the jewel of the Silk Road. Spend the afternoon at the Registan, a vast square framed by three towering madrasas covered in blue and gold tilework, one of the great sights of the world, and return after dark when it is lit up.

Day 3: Samarkand

Go deeper into Samarkand. Wander the Shah-i-Zinda, an avenue of dazzling tiled tombs, pay respects at the Gur-e-Amir, the tomb of the conqueror Timur, see the huge Bibi-Khanym Mosque, and climb to the remains of the Ulugh Beg observatory, a medieval marvel of astronomy.

Day 4: Bukhara

Travel on to Bukhara, a compact old city you can explore entirely on foot. See the towering Poi Kalyan minaret and mosque, the mighty Ark fortress, the peaceful Lyab-i-Hauz pool ringed by mulberry trees, and haggle through the domed trading bazaars just as merchants did centuries ago.

Day 5: Bukhara and fly out

Enjoy a final slow morning in Bukhara’s lanes and craft workshops, then take the train back towards Tashkent for your flight home, or fly out of Bukhara or Samarkand if your schedule allows. Leave a comfortable buffer for the transfer.
