    The route at a glance

    Day by day

    Day 1: Arrive in Yerevan

Settle into the pink-stone capital, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Walk grand Republic Square, climb the Cascade, a giant stairway of galleries and fountains, for city views, and have dinner on buzzy Northern Avenue.

    Day 2: Garni and Geghard

Drive east to the Temple of Garni, a Greco-Roman colonnade perched above a basalt gorge, then the extraordinary Geghard monastery, partly carved straight into the rock. On the way back, watch lavash flatbread baked in an underground tonir and share a home-cooked lunch.

Day 3: Khor Virap and wine country

Head south to Khor Virap monastery, framed by the snowy cone of Mount Ararat across the Turkish border, the national symbol of Armenia. Continue to the Areni wine caves, home to the world’s oldest known winery, and the cliff-wrapped Noravank monastery, before returning to Yerevan.

Day 4: Lake Sevan and Dilijan

Drive north to Lake Sevan, a vast blue alpine lake, and the Sevanavank monastery on its peninsula. Carry on into the green, forested resort town of Dilijan, Armenia’s Switzerland, and the pretty Haghartsin monastery, then return to the city.

Day 5: Last morning and fly out

Browse the Vernissage open-air market for carpets, khachkar carvings and jewellery, see the Mother Armenia statue and Victory Park, enjoy a last cafe and view of Ararat, then head to the airport.
